Novak Djokovic, the nine-time Australian Open champion, has edged out qualifier Dino Prizmic in a thrilling five-set battle in the tournament's first round.
The Serbian star prevailed 6-2, 6-7 (5), 5-6, 6-3, 6-4 in a match that lasted three hours and 35 minutes. It was Djokovic's longest first-round match at the Australian Open and the first time he has dropped a set in his opening match at the tournament since 2018.
Djokovic praised Prizmic, an 18-year-old Croatian, after the match, saying he has the potential to be a future Grand Slam champion.
